Ark Royal back after £12m refit
The aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal has returned to the Royal Navy fleet after undergoing a major upgrade.
The ship has been out of service for seven months while undergoing the £12m refit by BVT Surface Fleet in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
The warship will now undergo sea trials before returning to its position as flagship, taking back the role from its sister ship HMS Illustrious.
Ark Royal's return was marked by a Red Arrows display in Portsmouth on Friday.
The refit included the fitting of new exhaust systems, an updated IT network and improvements to sewage treatment plants.
The gearboxes, main engines and diesel generators have been refurbished and the hull has been painted with new "intersleek" paint to improve fuel consumption.
The Red Arrows display was part of events to mark the return to fleet of Ark Royal which was held to coincide with the ship's annual families day, where friends and relatives have a chance to visit the crew on board.
Ark Royal's commanding officer, Captain John Clink, said: "Divisions and families days are always special occasions in any ship's programme, but this event was particularly important for Ark Royal.
"It marks our imminent return to the operational fleet as the nation's strike carrier, as well as giving us the opportunity to show off our fine ship to families and friends."

£1.8m High Wycombe Asda refurbishment to be unveiled
CUSTOMERS will get their first glimpse of a major £1.8m refurbishment of Asda in High Wycombe on Wednesday.
Mayor Julie Pritchard will lift the lid on the revamped supermarket in Holmers Farm Way, which first opened in 1982.
It will be heralded in by The High Wycombe Salvation Army band.
Tired old trolley bays, food counters and refrigeration units have been replaced as part of the ‘makeover’.
A game called checkout bingo will give customers the chance to win a bottle of champagne every hour the following weekend while a range of other activities are planned to celebrate the re-opening.
Facepainters and balloon modellers will be on site all day on Saturday September 12 and Sunday September 13.
There will also be a chance for shoppers to meet a fire crew from the area and see a fire engine close up.
Store Manager, Arrash Mahdavi, says: “We’ve moulded into something much better for our customers, the new store will be about stylish shopping without an enormous price tag.”

Interior Services Grp Sees More Refurbishment Bids
Interior Services Group PLC expects to bid on more refurbishment work in London in the second half, Chief Executive David Lawther said Tuesday, as more companies look to make investments after delaying projects earlier this year.
Speaking to Dow Jones Newswires, Lawther said that six months ago there were “significantly fewer” refurbishment opportunities valued at more than GBP10 million to GBP15 million than today.
However, he added that London will continue to be a difficult market.
“These tentative signs, in financial terms, won’t start to impact until nine months down the road,” said Lawther.
