New show, a dream come true?

So there is an assumption that people wish were true that one day you can go on holiday, come back and have your interior design all sorted out, after all the quibbling about what to have and where to put it. Now that actually happens on a new show called “Destination Design” on HGTV.

This new series finds out what meets people’s tastes, such as maybe a couple to an entire family. It’s presented by interior designer Taniva Nayak. She says “There is one thing for sure — on vacation, it’s hard to argue about what is beautiful, and what you both really like,” and “You are put into situations that are both fun and inspiring. And you are removed from the daily grind, and can see things you never thought you could be drawn to”.

Whilst filming one episode of the show, a couple were updating Nayak of all the things they liked when they were away, sending her photographs for ideas.

Floral design on a come back.

For the ones looking for a new carpet may do well to select one with a floral design if they wish for it to be fashionable when it comes tointerior design.

A change to start having flowery themes and away from “quasi-Italian style decor” will be a aspect of 2010, according to interior designer and member of the British Institute of Interior Design Mary Leslie.

She also said she will “undoubtedly” be a shift towards more colourful patterns over the near future, adding that this is often the case when economic times are hard.

Fellow designer Alison Bracey from Bracey Interiors Bristol said “there is a “definite” move towards more flowery and colourful themes in interior design, adding that “bland is not the way forward”.

Kelly Hoppen’s Tips

US girls think loads about what we wear - but what about how we decorate our homes? The fashion of interiors is second nature to British designer KELLY HOPPEN. Her “simple, yet opulent” style has featured in apartments, houses, hotels, restaurants and offices all over the globe.

Here, Kelly gives her top tips for interior trends in 2010.LIGHTING:This is very, very important. Hidden and concealed lighting creates clever shadows.

The black plum powder-coated steel Tommy desk lamp (Habitat, £15) is very eclectic. It has an adjustable head.

KITCHENS: Designs will be simple but with a modern twist, like the Carello two-door, stainless steel storage unit (Habitat, £469).

Plates will be on show, giving kitchens a very Italian look and feel.

BEDROOMS: They’ll be sexy, warm and inviting with lots of texture.

There will, however, be less space because the bed will be the star piece.

White Vermont bed linen will help it stand out (J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams, £22-£75).

ACCESSORIES: A well-placed or appropriately coloured cushion can add a subtle splash of character to a room.

The grey feather fur one from the Star by Julien Macdonald collection is ideal (Debenhams, £15).

CARPETS AND RUGS: Pattern, shag and thick piles with a comfortable sinking feeling are a must for this year - such as the Shaggy Shinny Rug (Zara Home, £139.90).

TABLES: Tabletops will be mix and match and dining refectory tables are in, not only in wood but with edgy lacquers.

Sold as a set of two, this Onokuni nest of tables is simple yet sophisticated (Zara Home, £89.99).

Major faults delay Savoy’s £100m refit by over a year

The £100 million refurbishment of The Savoy has been delayed by more than a year after big structural problems were found.

The hotel may not actually open until July as doubts mount that the total cost could surpass £200 million, although operators Fairmont Hotels and Resorts will not reveal the exact number.

Some of the hotel has been underpinned with roughly 200 tonnes of steel after moldy timber and fragile floors were exposed. The hotel’s dangerous wiring and plumbing have also postponed the project.

The make-over was thought to last 16 months when it shut in December 2007. General manager Kiaran MacDonald said: “Therefurbishment is very much in delay, and it’s fair to say the budget is now in excess of £100 million.”
