The £12.5m refurbishment of the London Eye has begun with the removal of the first of its 32 capsules.
The 10-tonne capsule was taken down from the 440ft (134m) high wheel on the South Bank and floated down the river to Tilbury Docks in Essex.
The pod will be taken to Worcester where new heating and ventilation systems and entertainment facilities, will be installed.
The work is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2012 London Olympics.
‘Dramatic work’
A temporary capsule, which does not carry visitors, will be used to replace each one while it is being worked on.
The owner said the attraction would remain open as normal during the work, with capsules being refurbished one at a time.
Ceiling-mounted TV screens and better wi-fi are also being installed.

George Bond shares his skills
INTERIOR designer George Bond has been giving the benefit of his experience to aspiring students.
The Newcastle-based designer, who rose to fame as part of Carol Vorderman’s Better Homes television programme, has been mentoring students from Newcastle College.
George, whose interior design company is based in Jesmond, was first approached by Newcastle College three years ago to take on a student studying for a foundation degree in interior architecture.
Since then he has taken other students from the college under his wing, all of whom are still with the company and have been working between two and five days a week with him. Raymond Watkin, 20, from Wallsend, has been with George since October and is now so keen on a career in the industry that he has signed up to the college’s third-year course to get his degree.

Solution found to empty Woolies store
A NEW lease of life is being breathed into the former Woolworths building in Enfield Town after a new business moved in.The building in London Road has been taken over by Home Solutions, a small business based in Chingford.
Shop fitters are busily replacing the shelves before filling them up in time for a July 6 opening.Retail pundits have said that Woolworths, a company which opened its first British store in Liverpool in 1909, lost its way in the past decade because was too much of a general store.
Other high street discounters and internet businesses such as Amazon and Play also ate into its profits. But far from trying a different kind of shop altogether, the shop’s new boss, an independent trader from Woodford Green, intends to stick to a very similar formula to its former occupiers.
Shoppers can expect furniture, homewares, cards, toys, stationery and the old Woolies’ favourite, pick and mix.
